Uncertainty remains as it relates to Derek Carr's 2025 availability for the New Orleans Saints, but developments and details are emerging.
Carr has been to New Orleans twice in recent weeks to meet with the Saints doctor at the team facility, and his preference is to avoid shoulder surgery, 国产外流网Network's Jane Slater reported Tuesday.
Carr is dealing with a shoulder ailment on his throwing arm that could put his 2025 campaign at risk, 国产外流网Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported on April 11. Since then, Saints general manager Mickey Loomis said the team was waiting for clarity and Carr later confirmed his injury status whilst adding he and the franchise were "figuring it out."
Nonetheless, details have been hazy.
Slater provided more on Tuesday.
Carr, who missed seven games last season due to oblique and wrist injuries, is of the belief that his shoulder was injured in a Week 14 loss at the New York Giants, Slater reported. It's the same game in which he injured his wrist and was the last time he suited up for New Orleans in 2024.
Details didn't emerge sooner because Carr didn't start throwing "meaningfully," Slater added, until the spring and that's when he took notice of it.
The 34-year-old's reluctance to undergo surgery stems from having previously had a procedure on the same arm.
There is no timeline on a decision, but Slater reported one is expected "sooner rather than later."
Carr has played 11 国产外流网seasons, with his first nine coming for the Raiders and his last two with the Saints. He was a four-time Pro Bowler for the Raiders and has compiled 41,254 career passing yards, 257 touchdowns and 112 interceptions.
In 10 games for New Orleans last year, he produced a 5-5 record as a starter, threw for 2,145 yards, 15 touchdowns and five picks.
With Carr's status for 2025 in limbo, the Saints' QB room is currently stocked with 2023 fourth-rounder Jake Haener and 2024 fifth-rounder Spencer Rattler, who each started in Carr's place last season, along with rookie second-rounder Tyler Shough.
Preparing the squad for the upcoming season will be a tall order for rookie head coach Kellen Moore, who is tasked with waiting on a status update for the veteran Carr and/or preparing a stable of inexperienced signal-callers.
The wait on Carr's future continues, but developments are at hand in the Big Easy.
